1 Child appears bright and articulate but is unable to read, write, or spell at grade level. Confused by the sequences of numbers, letters, words or verbal explanations.
 
 
2. Child is considered unmotivated, lazy , careless, immature, "not trying hard enough," or "oppositional”
 
 
3. Has a normal to high average IQ yet may not test well academically; or tests well orally, but not written.
 
 
4. Feels dumb; has poor self-esteem; hides or covers up weaknesses with creative compensatory strategies.
 
 
5. Child avoids reading and becomes easily frustrated and emotional about school, reading or testing. May complain of dizziness, headaches, stomach aches or fatigue when reading.
